History of Ronan Telephone Company

1910

First telephone service in Ronan, company started by Mr. Stephens.

Mr. Stephens died in the 1920s. Mrs. Stephens continued to manage the company. She remarried Pat Kreider, and the couple continued to operate the company until 1946.

From 1910 to 1946 the phones worked on local battery power and each phone had a hand crank generator for ringing. The caller would pick up the phone and crank the handle on the phone. Then the operator would come on the line to connect the caller to the desired party.

1946

In 1946, the power generation for the phones was updated from magneto to a common battery system located in the central office of the company. The system was still all manual, meaning that the caller would pick up the phone and the operator would come on the line to connect the call.
