Troubleshooting

Problems in you telephone set, in the wiring inside your home or office, or in the telephone company's outside line and switching equipment could be the source of problems in you phone. Simple test can help determine whether to call you telephone company for assistance.

Noise On Your Line

Noise on your line may be caused my the weather, poor grounding or other conditions that are only temporary. If the noise persists, the trouble shooting test may help define the problem.

These test can help determine why your phone isn't working:

  • Check to see if all your phones are hung up.
  • With a modular phone, unplug the one with the problem and try another phone. If this corrects the problem, probably the first phone need to be repaired. If you have phone accessories, such as an answering machine, make sure the equipment is working. If your telephone service works without the added equipment, the problem may be with the accessories.
  • Check the phone at the phone jack nearest to where your telephone line comes into your premise. If the phone works at this location but nowhere else, it is probably a problem with the inside wiring or jacks. Test other jacks inside your premise to determine if one or all are not working.
  • If the problem sitll exists, you can test the telephone line at the Telephone Network Interface (protector) by folling the instruction in the diagram below.

To Test Your Line:

Open the cover on the Telephone Network Interface, remove the plug from the test jack and plug in a working telephone. If you can make a call, the problem is inside your premise. If you cannot make a call, unplug the telephone, replace the plug in the test jack and contact the telephone company. Caution - Remove the plug from the test jack before making wiring changes.
